OLG Tribunals

The Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), an agency of the Government of Ontario, is responsible for the adjudication of alcohol and gaming matters under the Liquor Licence Act and the Gaming Control Act, 1992. It also takes care of matters related to alcohol regulation, motor vehicle impoundments and driver’s licences, new home warranties, consumer protection, regulation of various occupations and business, etc. You can appeal and get a hearing for any case related to the LAT, and you can call Thomsen Paralegal Services for representation and advice.

OMPs and NOPOs

If you have received a Notice of Proposed Order or an Order of Monetary Penalty, you have the right to a hearing or appeal before the LAT. Our paralegal services can represent you at hearings and appeals, and we can do it at a cost that will make it easier for you in this difficult time.

If the Registrar issues an Order of Monetary Penalty (OMP), this is the stage between a warning and a suspension or revocation of your licence or authorization. The document you receive must include the allegations and details of the alleged infractions in the Order. The OMP is a legal Order, and non-payment may result in further action being taken against your registration.

If the Registrar proposes to refuse, revoke or suspend a registration, the Registrar must serve a Notice of Proposed Order (NOPO). This is the final stage, and your registration will be suspended until you win your appeal. The document you receive must outline the reasons for they are seeking to take away your registration.

Your Appeal Times Are Short, So Don’t Wait

If the Registrar believes the issue is serious, they may issue an immediate suspension of the registration, which takes effect immediately upon being served. The registrant may appeal the immediate suspension to LAT, but the timelines are short – a request for a hearing before LAT must be made within 15 days.

Going into the appeal, you are expected to know and follow the LAT Rules of Practice, making paralegal representation smart. Thomsen Paralegal Services can also consult a representative before the hearing or appeal, giving advice on the strengths and weaknesses of the case and the best way to present it to LAT.
